One of the most popular pets is the cat. The cat is the perfect companion to many different personalities. It is small, excellent for apartment duelers. It is an independent animal who likes to spend some time alone and to sleep for hours – just perfect for the person who works most of the day. If you like a cuddly animal, it can be that too – when in the mood. It can be the perfect companion for the elderly bound at home, as well as the right size pet for kids.Reading Vet

Cats have been around for thousands of years. They have been used for hunting and rodent elimination; they have also been adored in temples, and persecuted as evil beings due to ignorant popular beliefs. Until today, some of those myths plague the minds of some people, who cringe at the sight of a black cat crossing their path.

There are many cat breeds today, and cat fanciers and breeders keep experimenting with more variations of some breeds. These breeds get their recognition through cat shows, registries, and cat societies. Some of these organizations do not recognize other breeds. There are breeds that date back through history, and many that have mixed altogether. Some of the most common breeds are the domestic short hair or common cat, long hair cat, the Persian cat – a favorite amongst cat lovers, and of course, the popular loving Siamese.

Breeds range in price, from modest pricing to very expensive, depending on lineage. The purer the breed the more money you pay for it. Cat breeds have their own special characteristics such as physical traits in their face, body, and color. The more pronounced and perfect these traits are, the more appealing the animal is for show. The more popular these shows and cat fancier societies became, the more breeds started to show up.

Unfortunately, there are many homeless and abandoned cats, and many generations become feral, due to no human contact and love. They multiply by the hundreds and stay in clans throughout neighborhoods, claiming their territory. Many abandoned cats are adoptable, but feral cats are hard to adopt since they lack the human contact since birth. They are very aloof and distrust people, so they run away when approached. They will become scared and scratch if you try to capture them. Many will succumb to diseases such as feline leukemia and spread it to others in their clan.

When thinking about getting a cat as a pet, consider adopting one from a shelter. You will be providing a safe and lovable home for a homeless, rescued, or abandoned pet, and in return, you will get the unconditional love and devotion of a furry friend.
